Top terrain for outdoor fun in the spectacular Ozark Highlands.
Surrounded by a lush National Forest, a majestic river and a constellation of dazzling springs, the Rolla-St. James region puts the great outdoors right outside your door. In fact, thanks to smart, people-friendly planning and development, you don’t even have to leave the city limits to enjoy fresh air and natural fun on the Rolla bike/pedestrian trail. Rolla-St. James’ ready-for-play recreational assets include:
Mark Twain National Forest: Headquartered in Rolla, the mammoth Mark Twain National Forest blankets the Missouri Ozark Highlands with 1.5 million verdant acres, 65,000 of those acres located right here in Phelps County. Although it was designated as a National Forest during the Franklin Roosevelt administration, the Forest feels timeless with the dramatic primal beauty of ancient volcanic mountains, huge underground springs, more than 5,000 caves. And with more than a half dozen wilderness areas, 19 designated natural areas, and the 44-mile Eleven Points National Scenic River, endless adventures are always just ahead with hiking, camping, fishing and more.
Maramec* Spring Park: Every day more than 100 million gallons of crystalline water flow from the Maramec Spring, the crown jewel of the Maramec Spring Park’s1800+ acres of forest and fields. More than 200 of those acres have been set aside for public use, creating an irresistible destination for fishing, nature viewing, picnicking and play. A working fishery and the remnants of an onsite ironworks make the Park a naturally fun and interesting destination for families and visitors of all ages.
Meramec* River: Cool, sparkling and stocked with trophies, the Meramec is a fisherman’s paradise, one of only three Red Ribbon trout areas in Missouri. Come cast a line for brown trout or rainbow trout in one of the state’s longest free-flowing waterways.
* Maramec Spring & Meramec River are spelled differently.
Rolla Pedestrian/Bike Trails: Come walk, come run, come all. Thanks to the cooperative efforts of a local coalition of government, civic and volunteer groups including the Rolla Garden Club and ACORN (A Community Organization to Restore Nature), Rolla has created an ever-expanding network of pedestrian/bike trails that keep residents connected and on the move. Rev up or unwind on a trail that winds past scenic attractions like the Missouri S&T’s Stonehenge replica, the ACORN Arboretum, the Frisco Caboose and two historic neighborhoods.
Get outside and enjoy! The Rolla -St. James region also offers all of the recreational amenities you would expect to make a fun filled day.
